Armed with a BFA in Graphic Design (1966) and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in set design and costume design (1969) from Carnegie-Mellon University he taught stage and costume design at the College of William & Mary, the University of Alberta and Webster College. After seven years in academia, he moved to New York where he assisted renowned designers Ming Cho Lee and Tony Walton before designing CLOUD NINE for Off-Broadway. He is best known for his Tony Award nominated set design for Tommy Tune’s Broadway hit, NINE The Musical, the model of which was honored by the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as one of Broadway’s top set designs ever. Some of his other stage productions included designs for the NYC Opera and the NYC Ballet as well as Liza Minnelli at Carnegie Hall.
Shortly after designing the popular hit, CATSKILLS ON BROADWAY in 1991, he moved to Los Angeles where he made his production designer/art director debut on the film THE FLAMINGO KID. Other film credits included BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, OVERBOARD, DOC HOLLYWOOD AND L.A. STORY.
Following graduation from University of Santa Monica with a 2nd Masters degree, this time in Spiritual Psychology he launched Places Of Peace, a non-profit organization dedicated to the design of public sacred spaces of refuge and contemplation in an urban environment. Among his works were a design for the Gandhi Peace Monument in Honolulu and proposals for the Memorial at the World Trade Center.
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Gerry Turnbull, his brother Bob and sister-in-law Sherry Miller of White Plains, NY as well as nephew Bill Miller of San Diego, CA and nieces Nina Young of Manhattan and Alison Miller of Berkeley, CA.
